Emerging Leaders to Meet in Cambridge, Massachusetts

The New England Independent Booksellers Association will be holding its next gathering of Emerging Leaders on Wednesday, May 7, at 8:00 p.m. at the Cambridge Brewing Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Megan Sullivan of Harvard Bookstore, who will host the meeting, said, "We'll be chatting informally, but with an intent to discuss the current economic troubles with regards to our stores." Lise Friedman Named Macmillan Sales Rep

Ken Holland, vice president, director of field sales for Macmillan, has announced that Lise Friedman will replace Marshall Presnick as sales rep in Southern California. Friedman was the promotional director at Dutton's Brentwood and has served as SCIBA president for eight years. She will begin working for Macmillan on May 12.

Publishing Triangle Announces 20th Annual Award Winners

On April 28, the 20th Annual Triangle Awards, honoring the best lesbian and gay fiction, nonfiction, and poetry published in 2007, were presented in a ceremony in New York City. Katherine V. Forrest was the 2008 recipient of the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement, named in honor of a legendary editor of the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, the Publishing Triangle presented special Leadership Awards to Richard Labonte and Carol Seajay. They were honored both for their individual contributions over the years and for their work publishing the e-newsletter "Books to Watch Out For."

• The Judy Grahn Award for Lesbian Nonfiction winner was Janet Malcolm, Two Lives: Gertrude and Alice (Yale University)
• The Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction winner was Michael Rowe, Other Men's Sons (Cormorant)
• Winner of the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction was Myriam Gurba, Dahlia Season (Manic D)
• The Ferro-Grumley Award for Lesbian Fiction winner was Ali Leibegott, The IHOP Papers (Carroll & Graf)
• The Ferro-Grumley Award for Gay Fiction winner was Peter Cameron, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You (Frances Foster Books/FSG)

Jane Addams Children's Book Award Winners Named

On April 28, the Jane Addams Peace Association, the educational arm of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, announced the winners of the 2008 Jane Addams Children's Book Awards. The winners are:

• Younger Children Category: The Escape of Oney Judge: Martha Washington's Slave Finds Freedom by Emily Arnold McCully (FSG).
• Younger Children Category Honor Book: One Thousand Tracings: Healing the Wounds of World War II by Lita Judge (Hyperion Books for Children)
• Older Children Category: We Are One: The Story of Bayard Rustin by Larry Dane Brimner (Calkins Creek)
• Older Children Category Honor Books: Rickshaw Girl by Mitali Perkins, illus. by Jamie Hogan (Charlesbridge); Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis (Scholastic Press); and Birmingham, 1963 by Carole Boston Weatherford (Wordsong)

The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards recognize titles addressing themes or topics that engage children in thinking about peace, justice, world community, and/or equality of the sexes and all races. Winners of the 2007 Nebula Awards Announced

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America presented the Nebula Awards for 2007 at the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown in Austin, Texas, on April 26. The winners were:

• Best Novel: The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon (HarperCollins)
• Best Novella: "Fountain of Age" by Nancy Kress (Asimov's July 2007)
• Best Novelette: "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate" by Ted Chiang (Fantasy & Science Fiction September 2007, Subterranean Press)
• Best Short Story: "Always" by Karen Joy Fowler (Asimov's April/May 2007)
• Best Script: Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro
• Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (Scholastic)
