House Moves Closer to Health Care Reform

The Chicago Tribune reported that House Democrats reached an important but tenuous agreement on President Obama's health care campaign that may facilitate a chamber vote for an overhaul in September. The agreement, worked out between a set of Blue Dog Democrats and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, alters the way the proposed government-operated insurance plan would function to ease concerns that private insurers would be obviated, said the Tribune.

Created with assistance from the White House, the agreement slashes more than $100 billion from the bill's price tag of more than $1 trillion, according to lawmakers who worked on the deal, the Tribune noted. It also exempts more small businesses from being required to provide health insurance for employees.
