Small Press Center to Celebrate New Name & Logo

On Thursday, May 31, the Small Press Center will officially debut its new name, the New York Center for Independent Publishing (NYCIP), as well as a new logo, at a cocktail reception at its century-old landmark building located in midtown Manhattan. The guest of honor will be Barney Rosset, founder of independent Grove Press.

Lloyd J. Jassin, chair of the NYCIP Executive Committee, said the new name more accurately describes the organization. "Since its founding in 1984, the center has combined unparalleled educational programs, with fabulous networking opportunities for independent publishers and other industry professionals," he explained. "Our name served us well over the decades, but didn't reflect who we had become -- a vibrant center for the publishing community."

Noting that the relaunch includes new member benefits and a new website, Karin Taylor, NYCIP director, said that the organization would continue to be a premier networking venue for independent publishers. Among its offerings will be an expanding series of events.

NYCIP and BookExpo America are co-sponsoring a host of programs at this year's trade show. Events include: An interview with Walter Mosley; a panel discussion, "The Future of Independent Publishing," moderated by Sara Nelson, editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly, and featuring Akashic Books, Soft Skull Press, Manic D Press, and Melville House; and a "Meet the Publishing Experts" program.

Industry professionals interested in attending the Thursday cocktail reception should send an e-mail to info@smallpress.org. For more information about NYCIP and for details about BEA events, visit www.nycip.org.
